Have you ever wondered why:
☀️ summers are warm
❄️ winters are cold
🌧️ rain falls from clouds
🍂 leaves change color in autumn?
These changes are all part of:
🌍 Weather and Seasons
Weather affects what we wear, how plants grow, and even the activities we do every day!
Let’s explore the amazing science behind weather and the four seasons.
🌦️ What Is Weather?
Weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a certain place and time.
Weather can change:
- every hour
- every day
- every season
Weather includes:
☀️ sunshine
🌧️ rain
❄️ snow
🌬️ wind
⛈️ storms
🌫️ fog
Meteorologists are scientists who study weather and make forecasts.
🌎 What Causes Weather?
Weather happens because of:
☀️ the Sun’s energy
🌍 Earth’s atmosphere
🌊 oceans and water
🌬️ moving air
The Sun heats Earth unevenly:
- some places become warmer
- some stay cooler
Warm air rises while cool air sinks, creating:
🌬️ Wind and weather patterns
🌡️ What Is Temperature?
Temperature measures how hot or cold something is.
Scientists use:
🌡️ Thermometers
to measure temperature.
In Canada, temperature is usually measured in:
°C (degrees Celsius)
Examples:
- 30°C = hot summer day ☀️
- 0°C = freezing point ❄️
- -20°C = very cold winter day 🥶
☁️ What Are Clouds?
Clouds form when water vapor cools and changes into tiny water droplets.
This process is called:
☁️ Condensation
There are different types of clouds:
☁️ Cumulus Clouds
- fluffy white clouds
- often seen on sunny days
🌧️ Stratus Clouds
- flat gray clouds
- may bring rain or snow
⛈️ Cumulonimbus Clouds
- tall storm clouds
- produce thunder and lightning
Clouds are an important part of the water cycle.
🌧️ What Is Precipitation?
When water falls from clouds to Earth, it is called:
🌧️ Precipitation
Types of precipitation include:
☔ rain
❄️ snow
🧊 hail
🌨️ sleet
Canada experiences all types of precipitation because of its changing seasons and climate.
🌬️ What Is Wind?
Wind is moving air.
Wind forms because warm and cool air move differently in the atmosphere.
Strong winds can create:
🌪️ tornadoes
🌀 hurricanes
🌊 storms
Wind also helps:
- spread seeds
- move clouds
- produce renewable energy through wind turbines
🍁 What Are Seasons?
Earth has:
🌎 Four Seasons
They are:
🌸 Spring
☀️ Summer
🍂 Autumn (Fall)
❄️ Winter
Seasons happen because:
🌍 Earth is tilted on its axis
As Earth travels around the Sun, different parts receive different amounts of sunlight during the year.
🌸 Spring
Spring begins after winter.
Weather becomes:
🌤️ warmer
🌱 wetter
During spring:
- flowers bloom
- trees grow leaves
- animals become more active
Many birds return to Canada during spring migration.
☀️ Summer
Summer is usually the warmest season.
Days are:
☀️ longer
🌡️ hotter
People often:
🏖️ swim
🚴 bike
🏕️ camp
Plants grow quickly because they receive lots of sunlight.
🍂 Autumn (Fall)
Autumn is when temperatures begin cooling again.
Leaves change colors because trees stop producing chlorophyll, the green pigment in leaves.
Leaf colors may become:
🍁 red
🟡 yellow
🟠 orange
Canada is famous for beautiful autumn forests, especially maple trees.
❄️ Winter
Winter is the coldest season.
Many Canadian regions experience:
❄️ snow
🧊 ice
🌬️ cold winds
Animals adapt in different ways:
🐻 bears hibernate
🦌 some animals grow thicker fur
🦅 some birds migrate south
Winter sports like:
⛷️ skiing
🏒 hockey
🛷 sledding
are popular in Canada.
🇨🇦 Weather in Canada
Canada has many different climates because it is a very large country.
Examples:
- British Columbia has mild rainy weather 🌧️
- Prairies can become very hot or cold 🌾
- Northern Canada experiences long winters ❄️
Canada also experiences:
⛈️ thunderstorms
🌪️ tornadoes
🌀 blizzards
Environment and Climate Change Canada studies Canadian weather and climate patterns.
🌎 What Is Climate?
Climate is different from weather.
🌦️ Weather
Short-term conditions:
- today
- tomorrow
- this week
🌍 Climate
Long-term average weather over many years.
Example:
Canada’s climate is generally colder than tropical countries.
🌡️ Climate Change
Scientists have discovered that Earth’s average temperature is increasing.
This is called:
🌍 Climate Change
Climate change can cause:
🔥 wildfires
🌊 floods
🧊 melting glaciers
🌪️ stronger storms
People around the world are working to reduce pollution and protect Earth’s climate.
💡 Fun Weather Facts
⚡ Lightning is HOT
Lightning can be:
🌡️ 5 times hotter than the Sun’s surface!
❄️ Every snowflake is unique
No two snowflakes are exactly alike.
🌪️ Tornado winds are powerful
Some tornado winds can spin faster than:
🚗 race cars
