Dinosaurs Explained for Kids 🦖
Canadian Curriculum Science Blog (Grades 3–7)
Dinosaurs were some of the most fascinating creatures ever to live on Earth. Some were taller than buildings, others ran faster than cars, and some even had feathers like modern birds!
But when did dinosaurs live? What did they eat? Why did they disappear?
Let’s travel back in time and explore the incredible world of dinosaurs! 🌍
🦕 When Did Dinosaurs Live?
Dinosaurs first appeared around:
⏳ 230 million years ago
They lived during a time called the:
- Triassic Period
- Jurassic Period
- Cretaceous Period
Dinosaurs ruled Earth for about:
🌎 165 million years
Humans have only existed for a very tiny part of Earth’s history — around 2 million years.
Scientists study dinosaur fossils to learn about ancient life on Earth.
Your original presentation discusses the timeline of dinosaur history and extinction.
🌍 Where Did Dinosaurs Live?
Dinosaurs lived on every continent, including:
- North America
- South America
- Africa
- Asia
- Antarctica
At that time, Earth looked very different:
- the climate was warmer
- there were huge forests
- giant ferns and evergreen trees covered the land
Some areas were swampy, while others were dry deserts.
Scientists believe Earth had fewer ice caps and more tropical environments than today.
🌿 Plant-Eating Dinosaurs
Many dinosaurs were herbivores, meaning they ate plants.
🦕 Plateosaurus
Plateosaurus was an early plant-eating dinosaur that grew up to:
📏 8 metres long
It used its long neck and strong claws to reach leaves on trees.
Other giant plant eaters included:
- Brachiosaurus
- Argentinosaurus
- Diplodocus
These dinosaurs needed enormous amounts of food every day to survive.
🦖 Giant Dinosaurs
Some dinosaurs were HUGE.
🦕 Argentinosaurus
Scientists believe Argentinosaurus may have been:
- around 40 metres long
- one of the heaviest animals ever
🦕 Brachiosaurus
Brachiosaurus had:
- a very long neck
- tall front legs
- the ability to eat leaves high in trees
These giant dinosaurs belonged to a group called:
🦴 Sauropods
Sauropods were some of the largest land animals in Earth’s history.
🍖 Meat-Eating Dinosaurs
Carnivores were dinosaurs that ate meat.
🦖 Tyrannosaurus Rex (T. Rex)
T. Rex was one of the most famous predators.
It had:
- huge sharp teeth
- strong jaws
- powerful legs
Each tooth could grow up to:
🦷 15 centimeters long
T. Rex used its teeth to tear meat from prey.
🐟 Dinosaurs Had Different Teeth
Different dinosaurs had different teeth depending on what they ate.
🐟 Baryonyx
Baryonyx had:
- cone-shaped teeth
- jaws designed for catching fish
🐦 Ornithomimus
Ornithomimus had:
- a beak-like mouth
- no teeth
Scientists study fossil teeth to understand dinosaur diets and behavior.
🏃 Fast Dinosaurs
Not all dinosaurs were giant and slow.
Some dinosaurs could run very fast!
🦖 Ornithomimus
This dinosaur had:
- long legs
- lightweight bones
- a slim body
Scientists estimate it may have run:
⚡ Up to 80 km/h
Fast movement helped dinosaurs:
- escape predators
- hunt prey
- travel long distances
🛡️ How Dinosaurs Protected Themselves
Dinosaurs had many ways to defend themselves.
🦕 Triceratops
Triceratops used:
- three sharp horns
- a large bony frill
to scare predators away.
🦴 Euoplocephalus
This armored dinosaur had:
- thick body armor
- a heavy tail club
It could swing its tail to defend itself from attackers.
🥚 Dinosaur Babies
Dinosaurs laid eggs, just like modern birds and reptiles.
Some dinosaurs built nests to protect their eggs.
🦕 Maiasaura
Maiasaura is famous because scientists found evidence that:
- it cared for its babies
- it brought food to young dinosaurs
This suggests some dinosaurs were very protective parents.
🪶 Did Dinosaurs Become Birds?
Scientists now believe many dinosaurs had:
- feathers
- beaks
- bird-like features
Modern birds are actually descendants of small feathered dinosaurs!
That means:
🐦 pigeons
🦜 parrots
🐔 chickens
are distant dinosaur relatives.
☄️ Why Did Dinosaurs Go Extinct?
About:
⏳ 66 million years ago
most dinosaurs suddenly disappeared.
Scientists believe this extinction may have been caused by:
☄️ a giant asteroid impact
🌋 volcanic eruptions
🌍 major climate changes
When the asteroid hit Earth:
- dust blocked sunlight
- temperatures dropped
- plants died
- food chains collapsed
This event is called:
🌎 The Mass Extinction
🦴 How Do Scientists Find Dinosaur Fossils?
Scientists called:
👩🔬 Paleontologists
search for fossils in rocks and deserts.
Fossils can include:
- bones
- teeth
- footprints
- eggs
Over millions of years, these remains turn into rock.
New dinosaur discoveries are still happening today!
🧬 Could Dinosaurs Ever Return?
Scientists do not believe dinosaurs will return exactly as they were.
DNA breaks down over time, making cloning very difficult.
However:
- scientists continue studying fossils
- new dinosaur species are still discovered
- technology helps us learn more every year
Dinosaurs may be extinct, but their story continues through science.
🇨🇦 Dinosaurs in Canada
Canada is famous for dinosaur discoveries!
Alberta’s:
🦴 Dinosaur Provincial Park
contains one of the richest dinosaur fossil areas in the world.
Canadian scientists have discovered:
- tyrannosaurs
- horned dinosaurs
- duck-billed dinosaurs
The Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta is one of the world’s top dinosaur museums.
