🧠 What Is a Fraction?

A fraction is a way of showing a part of a whole.

When something is divided into equal pieces and you take some of those pieces, that is called a fraction.

🍕 Pizza Fraction Example

Imagine a pizza cut into 4 equal slices.

You eat 1 slice.

You ate:

$\frac{1}{4}$

This means:

1 piece eaten
out of 4 total pieces

We say it out loud as:

“One quarter”

🔢 The Two Parts of a Fraction

Every fraction has TWO important parts.

1️⃣ Numerator (Top Number)

The numerator tells us:
👉 how many pieces we have

Example:

$\frac{3}{4}$

The numerator is 3

That means:
👉 we have 3 pieces

North is UP on a map!

So the Numerator goes on TOP.

2️⃣ Denominator (Bottom Number)

The denominator tells us:
👉 how many equal pieces the whole thing was divided into

In:

$\frac{3}{4}$

The denominator is 4

That means:
👉 the whole was cut into 4 equal pieces

So the Denominator goes DOWN below.

Fractions have special names.

Quarter past = 15 minutes
Half past = 30 minutes

Sharing cakes, pizzas, and chocolate bars uses fractions.

25 cents is:

$\frac{1}{4}$

of a dollar.

Example:

Both fractions show HALF.

✏️ How to Make Equivalent Fractions

Multiply BOTH numbers by the same number.

Example:

$\frac{1}{2}\times\frac{2}{2}=\frac{2}{4}$

$\frac{1}{2}\times\frac{3}{3}=\frac{3}{6}$

$\frac{1}{2}\times\frac{4}{4}=\frac{4}{8}$
